The ROC SUP Co. are a U.S family run company that have been in the market for >20 years and have sold in excess of 120,000 boards. They are a well respected manufacturer of quality inflatable paddle boards targeted for the beginner or intermediate paddlers.

Like many other manufacturers ROC offer an all inclusive kit or what they term a ‘premium paddle board package’. This is an all inclusive kit that will give you everything you need to get out on the water.

The Premium Paddle Board Package includes:

ROC 10’ Explorer Inflatable SUP outfitted with quality dual layer deck padding, multiple D-rings and a 6-point forward bungee system

ROC Adjustable iSUP PaddlePaddle – the light weight 3-piece adjustable aluminium paddle can be adjusted to suit paddlers of different heights. This is an entry level only paddle so for those that are looking to take to the water on a more regular basis, we would always recommend upgrading the paddle. Carbon fibre paddles for instance are far lighter in weight and have stiffer shafts making for more efficient paddling and increased overall performance which can be quite evident particularly over longer distances.

Ankle Leash – this is a must wear safety item that will ensure that you and your board do not become separated. The dual swivels help assist the leash from becoming tangled around your ankle while the coiled cord helps keep the leash out of the water thus creating less drag. The multi-layered cuff attaches to your ankle (or calf) providing additional comfort and security.

Fin – the tri-fin configuration consists of one durable detachable centre fin with two plastic side fins (side bites). A tri-fin configuration is the most common SUP setup which allows for added versatility in terms of both paddling styles as well as paddling conditions (flat water, surf etc.)

ROC iSUP BackpackBackpack – the light-weight backpack is made from a durable nylon material. The padded shoulder and waist straps are fully adjustable allowing for maximum comfort. The front and size straps also adjust to better secure the bags contents. Opening through a single front u-shaped zip, the bag can comfortably fit both the deflated board and all accessory items.

Pump – the single cylinder dual action hand pump with high pressure gauge and inflation hose is basic but will definitely do the job if you don’t mind a bit of a pre-paddling pumping workout.

If you can afford the additional spend and do plan on using the board more regularly, investing in an electric pump is always a great option. If you would like to learn more about some of the key ‘need to know’ electric pump vital signs, take a read of our article on our Top 5 Electric Pump picks. Some great options and all universal so will nicely compliment the ROC range of inflatable boards.

Dry Bag – you can never have enough waterproof storage options. The inclusion of a quality dry bag which can be easily tucked away under your bungee net is a nice little bonus and not something that we would typically find included within an entry level SUP package.

ROC 10’ Inflatable Paddle Board

Board Materials / Quality – not uncommon within the SUP market, the ROC 10’ Explorer is made from military grade polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that uses DuraWeld Technology. By virtue of the drop stitch construction a process which uses tens of thousands of fine polyester threads that connect the layers of ROC 10’ iSUP Construction Methodfabric together, the board is able to maintain its shape once inflated to form a rock hard rigid surface. This enables the boards to withstand impacts with rocks or other floating debris or if accidentally dropped on other hard surfaces.

Performance / Suitability – as a particularly light weight SUP (boards can weigh as little as 15 lbs through to as much as 40 lbs) the Explorer coming in at 17.5 lbs is more suited to calmer paddling conditions – flat water lakes, rivers or subdued ocean conditions. Its specifications offer quality stability and is well suited for beginners or intermediate riders that are not looking for an explosive ride or high end product.

In terms of performance, the board tracks well in stable paddling conditions and is easily manoeuvrable given its light weight construction. The centre fin is removable and is attached via a sliding pin as opposed to a snap-lock design system that attaches to the centre fin box. The two outer fins are permanently fixed to the board which is common for boards within this range. The 3-fin system is more than adequate for the desired paddling conditions which enables the board to glide and track well through the water.

Profile View of the ROC 10’ iSUP

It has a single central carrying handle (so not front and rear) although again given its weight it is not a challenging board to carry. The non-slip EVA deck traction pad is particularly generous as it stretches all the way from the cargo net right back to the inflation valve. The dual layer form offers a generous level of comfort and grip making for a nice ride.

The dimensions offer ample stability and room to accommodate the rider comfortably so can easily be enjoyed for general paddling, stretching, yoga, mild surf swell, fishing or general ‘child play’.

The Verdict

Lightweight and made from quality military grade materials, the ROC 10’ Explorer Inflatable SUP offers a complete package for the entry or intermediate paddler. The board offers a nice balance between stability, manoeuvrability and tracking particularly in calmer paddling conditions. It is suitable for children (noting its light weight) as well as adults or larger paddlers. For a board within the mid-$400 range it is well worth the investment so we give it a 4.5 out of 5.
