The Board

Deck View of the MOUSA 11’ iSUP

If nothing else, MOUSA have nailed the aesthetics and graphics down on their 11’ All Rounder with a colour scheme and design theme that was inspired by the stunning northwestern Italian villages of Cinque Terre. Having been there myself, its one for the travellers bucket list.

While the board itself is not feature packed, for an entry-level board in particular, MOUSA have adopted a quality build standard which has created a very rigid and durable paddle board. Extremely light-weight at 20 lbs as well so great for smaller or lighter framed paddlers.

At its centre, thousands of polyester threads are woven together to form a dense drop-stitch core. Drop-stitch construction has been used within the marine and aviation industries for a number of years and it is this construction method that enables the board to maintain its shape under extreme pressures once fully inflated.

Enveloping the inner core are two layers of military-grade PVC material which when combined with the inner and outer side rails, form a very rigid and durable waterproof outer skin that can comfortably withstand impacts with rocks, other underwater or floating debris or if accidentally dropped.

The top deck of the board is covered in a diamond grooved anti-slip EVA foam deck traction pad which assists with rider stability as well as providing added grip and comfort to help reduce paddling fatigue over longer distances.

The board also contains centre and rear grab carry handles made from 3 layers of nylon material for extra comfort and durability. The SUP is then rounded out with a 4-point rear bungee cargo netting area which is sufficient for carrying smaller accessories or personal items.

While we love the clean and simplistic feel of the board and appreciate that MOUSA are working within a certain price point, at little additional expense, the inclusion of a forward bungee cargo area as well as additional side D-rings would be a nice plus for when the next generation board is rolled out.

Performance / Suitability

Fishing, YOGA and Dog SUPing on the MOUSA 11’ iSUP

A flashy looking board is all good and well but if you’re not getting much out of it then its not exactly money well spent.

Take a look at the above graphics for instance. While MOUSA still cater very much to the new paddlers with their entry-level range of boards, their 11’ all-rounder clearly offers ample rigidity, volume and buoyancy for the average sized adult to comfortably tackle a whole host of paddling disciplines.

One of the key metrics that new paddlers will typically focus on is stability. While the build quality is clearly important, the boards overall dimensions are the other main contributor in determining stability.

Most all round recreational paddle boards are typically 10’ – 11’ long and 32” – 34” wide. Squarely within this bracket and at the upper end of this range, MOUSA have produced a nice board that offers a well-balanced ride with plenty of stability and buoyancy which is ideal for new paddlers who are till looking to find their feet and build on paddling technique.

In terms of performance, the board has a mild front rocker (upward turned nose) which helps in keeping the tip or nose out of the water as you paddle. Without this the board can bite into the water particularly in wavy conditions which will cause the tail to lift and throw you forward (known as pearling).

While all round boards are not necessarily built for speed, a tri-fin configuration or thruster fin set is the best set up for all round performance. The large centre fin is what helps maintain straight line tracking to maintain a course as you head in a desired direction while the two small side fins (side bites) help the board turn and manoeuvre as you work your way through different paddling strokes.

All in all and particularly for a board within this pricing bracket, MOUSA’s 11’ iSUP provides a well-balanced and enjoyable ride that is ideally suited for beginner and intermediate paddlers or those looking for a nice recreational ride in flat waters or moderate wave and swell conditions.

Accessories Package

MOUSA 11’ iSUP Accessories Package

Near on all iSUP packages these days will come with an all inclusive accessories package that will get you out on the water with no additional expense. Great for new paddlers and one of the key reasons that inflatable boards are seen as an attractive option. In addition to the standard inclusions (coiled SUP ankle leash, durable carry bag, detachable fins, paddle and pump) MOUSA have also thrown in a waterproof mobile phone carry case as well as a 5 litre waterproof dry bag for small accessories and personal items. A nice little bonus.

For those that are looking to take to the water on a more regular basis, we always recommend upgrading both the packages paddle and pump if you can afford the additional spend.

While MOUSA have suggested that their boards can be inflated in 3 minutes, I think they’ve managed to get a little over excited here as inflation times will typically take as long as 10 minutes for the vast majority of iSUPs.

While using the included single chamber dual action pump will definitely do the job and give you a nice pre-paddling workout, investing in a quality portable electric pump will always be money well spent. Our Paddle Board Electric Pumps article covers all of the key bases with links to some of the market leading products. Well worth a read.

When it comes to paddling and more so over longer distances, the difference between an aluminium paddle as has been included with this board, and a far lighter weight Carbon Fibre Paddle will become quite evident. Offering a more fluid rigid stroke and better overall performance and paddling output, you will again spend a few more dollars but the investment is in our view, definitely well worth it.
