Kids Rash Vests and Rash Guards

Kids Rash Vests and Rash Guards

If you’re a parent then protecting your kids against the elements is probably somewhat second nature to you. Protection against sun damage in particular is really important from a young age as the effects can have ever lasting consequences. Even in overcast or windy conditions, it can take as little as 15 minutes to get sun burnt so better safe than sorry.

Kids Rash Vests and Rash Guards

Kids rash vests, rash guards or simply, ‘rashies’ have been around for years and are very much part of a surfers ‘uniform’ so to speak. While they were initially used as an inner layer to protect the skin against irritation and rashes underneath wetsuits, rashies are now part of our everyday beach wear.

Aside from offering protection against abrasions caused by wetsuits, salt water and sand, quality rashies also help regulate our body temperature keeping us warmer when in colder waters as well as acting as an aid to provide protection against the sun – as much as SPF 50+. An SPF or Sun Protection Factor of 50 in effect allows only 2% of harmful UV rays to reach your skin making them ideal for children who are constantly in and out of the water.

While kids rash vests are a reasonably simple and often inexpensive garnet, when it comes to making your next purchase, some handy tips worth considering include:

1. Material / Fabric: aim for a quality product that is made from UPF50+ fabric. Full disclosure – I was until recently confused about the difference between SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). As Mr. Wikipedia has reliably informed me though, SPF is a standard that is used to measure the effectiveness of sunscreens whereas UPF is a relatively new standard and is specifically used with reference to fabrics. There you go. Made from polyester, spandex and other blended synthetic fibres, a good quality rashie will stretch but still retain its shape, as well as being breathable and quick drying.

2. Stitching: more often than not these days, many of the modern hiking, under garment and water sports manufacturers sew their garments using ‘flatlock’ seams. This method of sewing makes the garment more durable and helps eliminate chafing.

3. Style: in part fashion and personal choice – in part functionality. For greater warmth or sun protection, long sleeve rashies with a high neck make the most sense. More often than not though most opt for a short sleeve rashie as they are a little cooler but still offer the protection that most of us are looking for. Colour, print, pattern – its your call so don’t be shy !!

4. Size: yes it needs to fit you but the main sizing considerations depend on what you intend to use your rashie for. If its simply for sun protection, then loose fitting garments will be more comfortable and breathable. If you are however taking to the water and will be more active, then skin tight rashies make far better sense in terms of ease of movement, protection against sand and irritation as well as less drag and resistance when moving in the water.Affiliate Disclose Statement
