Goosehill Paddle Boards – 10’6” Sailor Review

Goosehill Paddle Boards – 10’6″ Sailor Review

With Paddle Boarding exploding as a recreational water sport, we as boarders have what seems to be limitless options available to us and from manufacturers all over the globe. Nice to have of course but as always its important to do your research. This brings us to one of the more niche iSUP manufacturers – Goosehill. A small company founded by a couple of ‘water-sport connoisseurs’ as they term themselves, they offer a small range of quality boards that are definitely worth exploring.

Let’s take a look at one of the two 10’6″ SUPs that Goosehill has on offer – the Goosehill 10’6″ Sailor.

For reference purposes, the other Goosehill 10’6″ board is the Rainbow R. The key difference between the two boards is the net weight of the Sailor is 2.2 lbs (1 kg) lighter which is ultra-lightweight across the entire iSUP market. The lighter weight enables the board to go faster relative to the Rainbow R and is well suited for recreational or flat water paddling. The Rainbow R on the other hand being slightly heavier is marginally more stable and offers greater boarding versatility.

Overview of the Package

Let’s take a look at what’s in the box:

The Goosehill 10’6″ Sailor Board – at 10’6″ the Sailor sits comfortably within the mid-sized range of all-round recreational SUPs so will be well suited for average sized paddlers. At the narrower end of the width spectrum (32″), the board will cater Goosehill Board Construction

for a more streamlined ride that will also track well. The thickness in conjunction with the Sailors build quality is where its buoyancy and rigidity comes from making it ideal for beginners and intermediate paddlers offering a more stable ride that will sit higher out of the water.

The construction method of Goosehill paddle boards is somewhat unique in that they use SCE (Super Construction Enhancement) technology which is what creates a highly durable but ultra-lightweight board. The SCE methodology laminates and blends a traditional single layer with a new layer to create an enhanced material. This material envelopes the internal drop-stitch core of the board. The dense drop-stitch construction uses thousands of polyester threads that connect the outer material together which enables the board to maintain shape and rigidity under extreme pressure. The end result is that the SCE constructed single layered board offers the same level of rigidity and durability as a double layered board but is lighter in weight making it easier to ride, carry and transport.

Surface up Goosehill SUP

Rounding out the boards exterior is the diamond shaped textured EVA Deck Padding that covers the majority of its surface providing cushioned slip-free traction whilst paddling. The 4-point Front Bungee system whilst simple in design has sufficient space to store your waterproof bag or other personal items. In the centre is the Grab Handle for manoeuvring or carrying the board and whilst there is only the one handle, this should be sufficient given the boards weight. On the rear of the board is a single D-ring for attaching your leash and the High-Quality Value for inflation which is said to be fully factory tested and 100% air-tight. On the underside of the board we have the fins which are in a standard Tri-Fin Configuration. The large detachable 9″ centre fin which is locked in place by a pin is accompanied by two permanently fixed side fins (side bites). This configuration is how most paddle boards are set up so they can allow for optimal tracking.

The Verdict

☑️ ultra-lightweight board
☑️ well constructed (SCE technology) and highly durable
☑️ very stable under pressure with good tracking
☑️ 440 lbs (200 kg) weight rated. This exceeds other compatible boards within this market range
☑️ 6″ thickness adding greater buoyancy
☑️ easy to inflate using the standard pump
☑️ comfortable durable deck padding
☑️ detachable centre fin system
☑️ 36 month warranty – most iSUPs normally come with 12 – 24 months only

🔘 quality of the backpack is questionable. A challenge faced by many board manufacturers

Overall the Goosehill 10’6″ Sailor is a nicely priced middle market board that offers a high level of stability and durability without breaking the bank. Perfect for recreational paddling for paddlers of all levels. The board is very well constructed and backed by a generous 3 year warranty for some added piece of mind. Definitely worth looking at if you’re in the market.

  1. Great post!! I’ve been tempted to try paddle boarding and after reading your review I think I might. I love that Goosehill’s target audience is the beginner to intermediate paddle boarders, looks like as a beginner I should look into this brand a little closer.

Thanks for providing this informative review.

    • Glad you found the article informative Tracy. It’s a quality mid-market board so worth taking a look at if your ready to make a purchase. Happy to assist further if needed so don’t be shy.

      All the best – Jason.

  2. This is just the article I needed to read! My family and I were thinking of outdoor activities since its nice and hot out and paddle boarding seems to be an excellent idea! I remember experiencing it once when I was younger but now as I look back in hindsight, I have a very blurred memory as to what kind of board it was or even if it was durable enough. All I remember was that it was very shaky so I am guessing very little stability. But then again, I was young and very thin, almost underweight… so maybe that’s why it was wobbly?

On that note, do you think the Goosehill 10’6″ Sailor Board is a good choice for someone like me who is petite and still underweight?

    • Hey Sasha. If you’re on the lighter side then a 10’6” board would be a nice option for you. This board in particular is light weight and very stable so again great for someone who is just starting out

I’d recommend taking a look at some options or borrowing a board (even a lesson) so you can get out on the water again to make sure its for you. I’m sure you’ll find the experience far better than way back when as the advancements in inflatable boards has come a long way over the years so you shouldn’t find it too challenging. Our post on Paddle Boarding for Beginners may also assist if you’re looking for some additional basic info.

      All the best – Jason.

  3. Paddle boarding sounds like a great activity that will help keep you fit while keeping you socially distanced out on the water. Being a non-swimmer though, this probably isn’t the safest of activities for me! 🙂 But your article was a very interesting read for me who’s not familiar with water sports.

  4. Hi Jason – I appreciate this article mostly because I do not do paddle boarding but I have always been fascinated by this sport. You have provided in-depth detail about this particular paddleboard brand and I think this is really useful especially where it is hard to make a choice on what to buy. Seeing paddle boarders handle themselves and balancing on the board while on the sea usually leaves me admiring their skill with this. I found the section ‘Why Paddle Board’ really insightful as it is nice to know the health and fitness benefits associated with this activity – learning that these benefits include a full-body workout engaging the core muscles is something I never thought of so thanks for this enlighting post. I have learnt so much about this sport and the equipment needed from this post, iI might just try my hand at it!

    • Thanks for your comments OLa and glad that you found it informative. While the product reviews are exactly that, reviewing an individual board, its nice to know that there are general takeaways on the sport as well. I do hope you get the chance to give it a try – very easy to get hooked on and a load of fun.

      All the best – Jason.

  5. My son is new to this sport but loves it so looking to buy him a board. Looking at this goose hill and the bluefin cruise as it has the dead option. He likes to sit at times so this appeals to him. He’s been borrowing this board and likes it but what would be your opinion on the bluefin option for him. Would it be a similar ride. Aware the cruise is heavier. Thanks

    • Thanks for dropping by Vicki. There are a lot of different boards that have a kayak seat option (either included or as an optional extra). What I’d suggest doing is to hone in on a budget and the type of paddling that your son is looking at doing and then work out what size board makes sense – Paddle Board Size Guide. You can then narrow it down and make a more informed call. I say this as there is an obvious price differential between the Bluefin and Goosehill SUPs so that might well influence your decision.

We have a whole bunch of board reviews on this site and you will of course find many others out there. You may also want to consider the GLIDE 02 Retro 10’6”. Similar dimensions although a higher spec and also includes the kayak seat.

Happy to assist further so please feel free to drop me an email on the contacts page as well.

      All the best – Jason.
